The temperature keeps climbing this summer, and thanks to COVID-19 and social distancing, many of us are spending more time at home than usual. Use Fans to Circulate Air Efficiently

Sometimes all you need to change the feel of a room is good air circulation. Try turning on your overhead fans for starters, but to maximize this effect you may need to pick up a few high-quality oscillating fans. Place one in the hallway to maximize horizontal airflow. Place another near the couch or in the kitchen. You’ll be amazed how much cooler it seems with good airflow. You might even be able to bump the thermostat up a couple degrees without feeling hot.

Leave the Oven Off: Grill Instead

Running the oven is one way to quickly raise the temperature inside your apartment. So, for the hot summer months, see how often you can get by without using the oven. Focus on cold sides and meals that can be prepared on the stovetop. Microwaves and toaster ovens are also great ways to heat food without unnecessarily heating your surroundings.

But the best option? Get out of the kitchen altogether. Head outside and grill! Not only will you keep your kitchen cool and save on electricity, your apartment will feel all that much cooler after you’ve been outside grilling for a while.

Be Strategic About Sunlight

We all love sunlight, and natural light can be a huge selling point for any property. But in the hot summer months, all that natural light translates into significant added heat. The next time you’re home on a sunny day, take the time to see where the sun hits your unit at various points in the day. Any windows or glass doors that get lots of sunlight between roughly 11am and 5:30pm are making your apartment hotter.

Install light-colored retractable blackout shades over the affected windows. Use these shades during the hottest part of the day, and you’ll make a big difference in your home’s overall temperature.

Go Green, Literally

Adding some houseplants inside your apartment might not seem like a solution to the heat, but it does make a difference. Depending on the plants you get (and how many you have), you could reduce indoor temperature by as much as 10 degrees, just by adding plants. And plants don’t require any electricity, so you’re making an eco-conscious (and utility bill-conscious) decision.

Don’t stop with indoor plants, either. Outfit your balcony with a range of greenery and hanging plants. You’ll enjoy similar benefits as well as shade.
